What Is A Bike Fitting?
Bike fitting is simply the connection of a bicycle to the rider. Like tailoring a suit or dress to fit an individual’s body, at King’s we fit the bike to the rider, not make the rider fit the bike. Your bike is an extension of your body, so it should act as such. Most people already own a bike that will fit them, it just hasn’t been properly tailored yet. Almost 100% of the people that come to us to get a fitting have never been fitted before. Why is that? We’ll get back to that.
Bike fitting is dealing with the connection points of a rider to their bike–the feet, the seat and the hands. These are the areas that everybody is complaining about when contacting us about a bike fit so it’s logical that those are the points of adjustment. By addressing the individual points of contact in the proper order, we can make your bike more comfortable and easier to pedal, thus allowing you to go longer and/or faster.
Why Doesn’t My Bike Fit Me?
Many reasons–here are some of the top things we hear when we schedule a fitting appointment. 1. Standing over the top tube of the bike has nothing to do with the bike fitting you AT ALL! 2. Your “height” has nothing to do with choosing what size bike you should buy. 3. The bike “business” is made to sell you stuff. Making it work right for you isn’t profitable. It takes experience, time, and the integrity to tell you that you are buying the wrong thing sometimes. 4. By the bike being uncomfortable, they hope to sell you more stuff as band aids after the fact. Of course these never really work so you either buy another bike or give up on the sport altogether.
A Different Approach That Works
Kings Bicycle Store has been doing fittings since the 1980’s. We found that by fitting the bicycles we sell, our customers ride their bikes. It seems simple, but they’ll ride much more than if we didn’t fit bikes. They buy new bikes and equipment over time and become life long customers and friends. They tell their friends who suffer on every ride to get their bike fitted. You can see why fitting is just good policy. Offering fitting to people who already own bikes encourages more people to ride and enjoy the sport with. If you’re a casual cyclist, Fondo rider, or active racer, a good fit will only benefit you.
